    Description
    This class is an introductory course for  students who wish to learn guitar. No previous experience playing guitar necessary. Fundamentals of standard music notation, chords, tablature and improvisation will be covered.
    Expected Outcomes:
    • Perform musical selections reading containing notes of 1st position.
    • Perform chord progressions.
    • Create an original 8 measure improvised solo using a pentatonic scale pattern.
    • Create a simple bass line by decoding chord symbols on a lead sheet.
    • Define the characteristics of a good song and defend an example.

     

     

    Note: This curriculum was written prior to the 2014-2015 school year. It is scheduled to be rewritten following the Rockwood Curriculum Schedule.

Details
1Creating: Improvisation
This unit focuses on using the creation process.
Students will use knowledge of music to create original solos.
2Performing: Parts of the Guitar/Tuning the Guitar
This unit focuses on using the different parts of the guitar.
Students will identify the parts of the guitar and use that knowledge to tune.


3Performing: Notes of First Position
This unit focuses on using the decoding of musical symbols to create melodies.
Students will perform musical selections using notes of 1st position of the guitar.


4Performing: Open Chords in First Position
This unit focuses on using the performance of open chords in 1st position.
Students will perform chord progressions from lead sheets and memory.


5Performing: Music Notation
This unit focuses on using the written language of music.
Students will demonstrate knowledge of the written language of music through performance and written assessments.


6Responding/Connecting: Music and Me
This unit focuses on using the context of music to describe form and function.
Students will recognize and write about form and context as it relates to music.
