    Description
    The Seventh Grade Language Arts block will continue to develop reading, writing, information literacy and listening and speaking skills.  Students will use metacognitive and active reading strategies to comprehend increasingly more complex material, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry and drama.  Students will use the writing process in order to create effective paragraphs and multi-paragraph pieces.  Emphasis will be placed on the Six Traits of Quality Writing.  Vocabulary instruction and word awareness will be embedded in the reading and writing processes.  Students will further develop media literacy skills, use of the research process, and their ability to evaluate both the relevance and reliability of information gathered.  Formal and informal speaking and discussion opportunities will be further promoted, as will listening for information.  Students will be expected to apply these skills in preparation for future years of study.

ELA701Be a Dynamic Storyteller: Narrative Reading and Writing
This unit focuses on understanding how authors craft narrative writing. During the unit, students will read a variety of narrative texts and evaluate and analyze literary elements in order to develop their own narrative.
ELA702Give the Details: Informative Reading and Writing
This unit focuses on understanding how authors create informative writing and how readers process various types of texts. During the unit, students will be critical readers and writers of informational texts as they prepare a multi-media presentation.
ELA703Prove Yourself: Argumentatively
This unit focuses on understanding how readers make deep meaning from fiction text. During this unit, students will analyze literary elements and cite text based evidence to support claims in a multi-paragraph argumentative essay.
ELA704Seek the Truth: Argumentative Reading and Writing
This unit focuses on understanding how readers analyze and evaluate non-fiction text. During this unit, students will develop research skills in order to form an argument that can be supported with textual evidence.
